“Trust the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your paths.” Proverbs 3:5-6.
Does trust come easy for you? When life is tough and you are going through struggles, do you trust God to take care of things and get you through?
Deep down in my heart, I can say that I trust God, but, I often have a “but” attached to it. God has certainly proven Himself time and time again to be trustworthy, but, there is a part of me that always tries to control things at the same time. Out of my own fear, I like to know what the outcome is going to be, and in my silly mind, I believe that by trying to control a situation I can influence it’s outcome. Do you do this?
I say, “my silly mind,” because that is exactly what it is. How can I possibly believe that I can control a situation? How can I think that I can manipulate the outcome? By trying to be in control, I just end up being an anxious mess. Silly right?
Proverbs 16:9 says, “We can make our plans, but the LORD determines our steps.
No matter how much we may try to control a situation, it won’t happen. God is always in control. The great thing about it though is that we can completely trust Him!
God loves us so much and wants the best for us. We can trust that the plans and outcomes He has in mind for us are exactly what we need and are what is best for us. It may not always feel that way, but in our limited understanding we don’t see the big picture like He does. It’s always a lot easier when we have walked through something to look back and see God’s hand in it. It’s a lot harder when we are in the middle of a difficulty.
If you struggle with trusting God by trying to take control like I do from time to time, I encourage you to spend time reading through the Psalms. There are so many that are a comfort to us. Psalm 37 in particular has many verses that are comforting:
3Trust in the LORD and do good.
Then you will live safely in the land and prosper.
4Take delight in the LORD,
and he will give you your heart’s desires.
5Commit everything you do to the LORD.
Trust him, and he will help you.
6He will make your innocence radiate like the dawn,
and the justice of your cause will shine like the noonday sun.
7Be still in the presence of the LORD,
and wait patiently for him to act.
18Day by day the LORD takes care of the innocent,
and they will receive an inheritance that lasts forever.
19They will not be disgraced in hard times;
even in famine they will have more than enough.
23The LORD directs the steps of the godly.
He delights in every detail of their lives.
24Though they stumble, they will never fall,
for the LORD holds them by the hand.
When we try to be the one to control our life and circumstances, it keeps us stuck. It keeps us stuck in a place of fear and anxiety. When we let go, and remember that it is God who is in control and we trust and depend on Him to know what is right and best for us, we gain freedom and peace.
God created us. We are special and unique in His eyes. He has a specific purpose for us to fulfill. He has a plan for our lives that is good and wonderful and beyond what we could ever imagine for ourselves. Let’s let go of control today and instead depend on God and completely trust Him.
